“The Extraordinaire 2026” Concludes with Remarkable Success

Thai Art Proves Its Strength with THB 51 Million in Sales, Strong International Participation

“The Extraordinaire 2026,” a landmark art auction organized by Bangkok Art Auction, has concluded on a high note, reaffirming the vitality and enduring value of Thai art. This year’s auction achieved a total sales volume exceeding THB 51 million from more than 51 artworks, driven by intense bidding from both Thai and international collectors.

Mr. Sermkhun Kunawong, Chairman of Bangkok Art Auction, highlighted one of the most notable phenomena of this auction: the significant presence of international collectors. Their active participation in bidding for key lots led to substantial price increases across several works. This reflects the growing global recognition of Thai art, not only for its aesthetic and historical significance but also for its strong investment potential on the international stage.

Another key highlight was the remarkable return of National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. All seven of his works presented in this auction were successfully sold through both auction and private sales, generating a combined total exceeding THB 15 million. This further reinforces his position as one of Thailand’s most powerful and consistently sought-after artists in the art market. The highlight piece, “Jit Phra Ariya / Bua Thip, 1992,” saw intense bidding, rising from a starting price of THB 2,800,000 to a final hammer price of THB 4,642,000. In addition, two charity lots raised over THB 380,000 in total, with proceeds donated entirely to Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital, demonstrating how art can extend beyond aesthetic value to create meaningful social impact.

The auction also set new price records for several artists, including:

  • Chamrearn Vichienket: Sculpture “Volume, 1969” sold for THB 1,218,525

  • Chalood Nimsamer: Large-scale work (1996) achieved THB 1,624,700

  • Kitti Narod: A rising contemporary artist whose work surged from THB 480,000 to THB 1,218,525 after competitive bidding

  • Takashi Murakami: “LV Cherry Infinity (2024)” sold for THB 812,350

“The overall outcome of ‘The Extraordinaire 2026’ reaffirms the strong momentum of the Thai art market. It is a moment when audiences are increasingly recognizing the true value of art—both culturally and as a serious asset class,” Mr. Kunawong concluded.
